The legend of the Iron Rooster dates back over 400 years to the days of the Ottoman Empire. When the Ottomans seized the city of Győr, their leader – Szinán pasha – claimed it would remain in Ottoman hands until the day when the wrought iron rooster weather vane that crowns the city’s bastions shall crow and the half moon upon which it stands waxes full.
